You can use the master/student system to teach one of your units the spells from the caster, too: create the caster with the unit you want to teach spells to (Rozalin for example) (that unit becomes their master), put them next to each other in battle, the master will temporarily be able to cast the spells of the caster, and will learn them permanently if you raise them to lvl 1.
The power, AoE and range of your spells increase with skill level and staff mastery, and you can hit elemental weaknesses for more damage. Magic is pretty powerful, especially in the first two games (where element affinity affects both offense and defense relative to that element), and some enemies resist physical attacks (Skeletal Dragons in particular). I would suggest to use at least once magic caster, like a Mage/Skull or a Magic Knight (to unlock, get rank 3 sword mastery on any character and rank 3 staff mastery on any character, then pass the "Make a busty beauty" bill at the Dark Assembly). There is often one map per chapter where it's easier to grind on.Ī really great spot to level up later on is stage 9-2 (Alche City, Grave of Alchemy), you can get lvl 99 enemies there by passing 8 SEBs, and lvl 99 enemies give you twice as much exp as usual in all Disgaea games. You can adjust the levels of enemies with Stronger Enemies bills (SEBs) at the Dark Assembly (don't forget to reset that back once you're done grinding). Stage 6-4 has an Exp +50% geo effect on the whole map.
